FAQ

For Apple users (iPhones, iPads), Just Talking can be found on the App Store. Android users can find the app on Google Play.

Once you download the app, you’ll be asked to log in through CILogin, an authentication platform which allows you to use an existing web account (email or otherwise). After you log in, you’ll be asked to create a profile and enter an Application Code. This code links you to the server your audio recordings will be sent to; if you don’t have one already, please contact your Application Provider for one!

Not at this time, no. While you can download the app without an Application Code, you will need an Application Code to create profiles and record audio. Application Codes are distributed by Application Providers.

Your Application Provider is the professor, teacher, or researcher who asked you to download the app! To be more technical, we use the term “Application Provider” to refer to people and institutions who partner with us to use Just Talking for research or pedagogical purposes.

You need the Just Talking app, which can be found on the App Store and on Google Play. You can use any recording device – like your phone or a tablet! When you record, try to make sure there is as little background noise as possible, and that you maintain a regular distance from your microphone – this makes sure the audio is as clear as possible! We recommend sitting in a room with lots of soft furniture (or a blanket fort would be even better!)

To record your audio press the microphone logo that is to the left of the timer. This will begin the recording and the timer will start keeping track how long your entry is. Once you have finished, press the stop button that is at the left of the timer. You can listen back to your audio by clicking the “Play“ button. You can delete your audio recording before submission by pressing the “Arrow” button in the top-left corner. If you are interested in adding an image to accompany your entry, and your project allows image upload, click the “Camera” button. When you are ready to send your entry click the “Submit” button at the bottom of the page.

You can have as many profiles as you’d like. Simply click the “Add Profile” button and make an additional profile. Click on that specific profile when you want to begin an entry for that profile. Note that all of your profiles will be linked to whatever account you used to verify your identity with CILogin.

Yes! All profiles you create will be linked to your CILogin information, so if you use the same account for CILogin on a different device, your profiles will sync between the devices. That being said, at the moment, audio diaries you record on one device will not sync to another.

We’d be thrilled to partner with you to achieve your research and teaching goals!

Please contact us at sneller7[at]msu.edu if your are interested in becoming a Just Talking Application Provider.

Your data will be stored on our secure server to which only study team members and your Application Provider have access. We give all participants a subject ID number, to keep personal identifying information separate from your audio files. Personal identifying information, such as your email address, will be kept in a distinct password-protected folder separate from your data. Audio and transcript excerpts shared in publications about research with this application will be entirely anonymized.

As university employees, researchers may not be able to maintain as confidential the following: child abuse, child neglect, relationship violence, sexual misconduct, stalking, retaliation, discrimination or harrassment based on sex, race, color, national origin, religion, age, height, weight, marital status, or disability that is related to the University community, or an immediate threat to yourself or others. We are not seeking this type of information in our study, nor will you be asked questions about these issues. However, if you do disclose this type of information, we may need to report it to the MSU Office of Institutional Equity and/or the Department of Police and Public Safety.
